A Beslan mother’s impossible choice

By CNN’s Ryan Chilcote

BESLAN, Russia (CNN) — After more than 24 hours in captivity in Beslan School No. 1 with her two daughters, Anetta had to make a choice.

The hostage-takers had struck a deal with a Russian negotiator to let a small group of mothers leave the school with their infants, but any older children would have to stay.

Anetta pleaded with terrorists to leave her behind, and let her 9-year-old take 1-year-old Milena out instead.

There was to be no compromise, either she went with the infant or no one would be released.

“My bigger daughter looked at me and every time, every time I see her eyes.”

Her elder daughter Alana started to cry.

“I looked at my daughter, my big daughter. ‘Alana you are clever girl. You wait,’ I told her.”

The last time she saw Alana alive was as she left the school with a group of other mothers, many of whom had to make a similar choice.

Twenty-four-hours later, Alana was still a hostage — sleeping, a survivor said, when one of the terrorists’ bombs went off.

“When the blast went off, she must have gotten up and started running away because she had a bullet in her neck,” Anetta says.

Every morning, Anetta goes to the memorial cemetery. Every morning, she seeks forgiveness.

“My darling,” she says, “Mommy didn’t protect you. Mommy didn’t save you. I left you there. I thought all three of us would die if we stayed. Why don’t you come to me in my dreams?”

Two years ago, Alana was a star of her class. She spoke to graduating students. The words she said then now have new meaning.

“This is the last time I will sing for you,” she said. “I will remain in the school to live, and for you will I remain the past.”

From her apartment’s balcony view of the school, Anetta struggles with a decision that freed two lives, but forever made her a hostage of her choice.

Wherein everyone bows out gracefully.

Dear Gary,

I just graduated, and was president of a club in my final year. Know what you feel about all these admin stuff. I am very glad that you are taking a stand and voicing it. We need more student leaders like you, and I have often done the same while I was a president of a club.

Just some advice. Sometimes the staff at SAO are not the best at handling such issues. I know that there have been a marked improvement since I was first came into NTU, but there are still times I feel like punching some of them. However, try not to get worked out over it because it just makes matters worse. Keep a level head and actually things are easier to solve.

I know Wendy, Yan Hong and Mrs Lam from SAO because of my “feedback” to them. I will usually call them up to just clarify about the emails they sent if they appear unclear. For example, once a mail was sent out “forcing” us to attend something which was actually a directive from higher up and totally out of their hands. Other times, they realised they miscommunicated and actually apologised. I think they appreciate students talking to them and telling them where they might have gone wrong. However, do it constructively.

When i first saw your email, I was actually quite disappointed with the school and wanted to write a letter to Su Guan Ning (I have done it before, and he will actually reply). However, after drafting my letter, I decided to ask SAO for clarification, hence clearing up the misunderstanding regarding the fine. I have also gone to my professors and dean to discuss about certain issues if I see that there can be an improvement. You’ll be surprised at how appreciative they can be when students step forward with opinons and sincerity to help.

Just hope that my experience may have encouraged you. Continue to persevere in what you believe in.

Regards,

Dear XXXXX,

Thank you for your heartfelt correspondence.

Throughout this whole episode, I have received several emails from members of the student leader population - some blasting me for incessant whining and being out of line, but otherwise mostly supportive or neutral. Your message was one of the more substantiated pieces of which I couldn’t help but take note and digest.

I am not an unreasonable person - as those who know me will testify - nor do I raise issues just to get noticed. In fact I abhor confrontations (I hate to tap the shoulder of the person who just cut my queue), but I will stand up for what I think is right in whatever way I can.. Dictated mostly, I suppose, by expereince.

I originally started this brouhaha not out of spite, nor of any ill-will toward Mrs Gwee, Yan Hong or even the SAO as a whole. I did it because I sincerely felt the SAO shouldn’t be allowed to “eat” the student leaders just because they are the authority where Students’ Affairs are concerned. I needed someone to know that if they ever tried, and even if they succeeded, someone somewhere wouldn’t go down without some form of resistance. Maybe I interpreted the original mail wrongly.. (no sacarsm here this time!) I don’t know, nor does it matter now. What does matter is that all student leaders can rest easy knowing that only those who registered and fail to turn up will be levied with the fine.

You and I reached the same destination - you with a simple and polite letter to the SAO - and I, via the long route through Fuss Valley. This is a shortcut, I have to admit, I have just learnt. =)

Regards,

Gary Koh

PS. Once again, thank you for your email. I really, really appreciate it.

Subject: Closure.

Dear Yan Hong and Mrs Gwee,

I hope the sight of my name in your inbox doesn’t cause anger, disgust or dread after all this. I am writing mainly so this affair can have some form of semi-official closure.

First off, I would like to assure you that my last series of emails carried no ill-will toward any member of the SAO, merely the medium of notice of the leadership course.

I was upset because:

     - The advance notice was really too short for something which would take two full days. Moreso because given any other circumstance, I really wouldn’t mind attending the course (honestly!).. just that this time round I have already made plans.

     - I took the email to imply that everyone and anyone who qualified for the course and who didn’t turn up would be susceptible to the S$200 penalty. This, I thought, was the unfairest of issues.

     - The email carried a rather heavy-handed tone, and seemed to say “We are the SAO, and we have organized a course for you. We have been kind enough also to sponsor your tea breaks, and if you don’t come you will have to pay us $200.”

Perhaps I overreacted in this whole affair, and if I have caused any hurt, I sincerely apologize. I am also very appreciative of the phonecall I got from Mrs Gwee this afternoon to clear things up. However, I do hope you will understand why I felt the way I did. If I could glean that message from the email, I am very sure someone else out there would have formed the same impression. I am not an unreasonable person, and I don’t pick confrontations as a hobby.. though I will stand up for what I think is right. That is just my nature, I suppose.

Throughout this whole episode, I have received several emails from members of the student leader population - some blasting me for incessant whining and being out of line, some supportive, some neutral. One senior showed me a couple of things which gave me food for thought; most notedly his achievement of clarification through a simple email seeking an answer. I, on the other hand, made a big fuss.

This is something new, I guess, I have learnt.

Regards,

Gary Koh</lj-cut>

Alright…

Mrs Wendy Gwee (that’s Mrs for respect) called me regarding my last email to Teo Yan Hong barely 5 minutes after i pressed the “send” button.

She “assured” me the original message behind the mail was that the fine would only be levied on those who signed up and didn’t go - contrary to all semantical and grammatical indications.

ok.. shall leave it as that.

some more correspondence:

Relax Gary, Wendy Gwee has made her message unclear and thus the understanding of it is ambiguous. I understand your frustration and anger as I have complained to her about her e-mail before. Apparently she still has not instilled some human touch into her messages. She only sits in the office and does not understand our problem.

What we need to do is clarify with her on the ambiguity in the message and inform everyone about the correct meaning of it. We do not need to get heated up over this matter. Take a step back and think about the situation and then you can understand and solve it better.

Dear XXXXXX.. thank you for dropping me a note regarding this entire affair. It’s nice to know someone can see where i’m coming from.

I originally decided to persue the matter because I felt that the SAO shouldn’t be allowed to “eat” any of the student leaders just because they are the “big boss” where students’ affairs are concerned. I forwarded the email correspondence to all involved because I wanted the proceedings to be as transparent as possible.

Mrs Gwee has (5 minutes after my last email) called me up personally to explain the issue. While the official change of stand from SAO regarding the S$200 penalty is still rather unconvincing, I accepted that call as a token of graciousness on the part of the SAO. She didn’t have to call me personally, but she did. Things were thrashed out in a polite and civil manner. From a practical point of view, all student leaders can now rest easy under the assurance from SAO that the penalty will only apply to those who signed up but do not turn up for the course. I have highlighted to her the ambiguity of that particular email, and the false perception it gave to the student leaders. That said, I have made up my mind to let the matter rest. That will be the last email from me with regards to this issue.

Thank you once again for your kind message. =)

Gary Koh</lj-cut>

case closed.

I AM SO HOPPING MAD I AM LOST FOR WORDS.

I got an email from SAO last night. made me boil for hours… till i finally dozed off at 4.30am.

SOMEBODY obviously thought it would be a good idea to unilaterally sign up ALL the student leaders in school for a leadership course. in the mail, we were told:

the workshop will take two whole days

it is a privilege

two tea breaks per day will be fully subsidised by the SAO

lunch, however, “is on your own”

if we are absent with no valid reason, we will be required to reimburse SAO the $200 fee

if we are unable to make it for either day, we are supposed to send the second-in-charge

So now they’re trying to extort an attendence out of me, is it? if everything goes smoothly this time round, what’ll be next? anger management courses? risk management? decision making? flower arrangement? I refuse to be manipulated so easily.

what’s more, if it were truly “a privilege” as they claim, wouldn’t it concern them if the target audience won’t be able to make it? “Send your second man”? fuck them. they just want someone to fill up the seat so they don’t look bad. i could send my maid, and they wouldn’t give two shits.

woke this morning deifnitely on the wrong side of the bed. fury still glowered somewhere inside, like hot coals, which promptly burst into flame as i sat in the library later on in the day, trying to concentrate on my logbook. Couldn’t help but mull over the tone and the intended message of the email, and the more i thought about it, the more incinerated i became.

looked for a computer and shot off a reply. i thought long and hard about it, but found i just had to, else i’d be doing myself a great disservice.

this is the conversation as it stands now.. (will be updated as more mails turn up. oldest first)

This is only apply when student leader will be absence without given any valid reason, I’m sure you are not and that show the integrity of our student leaders. So, can I confirm your attendance?

That’s nice.

I would certainly hate to believe that members of the student population are being coerced into submission through the use of heavy-handed techniques involving short, authoritarian notice, non-consultation and promises of a monetary disincentive. I must have interpreted the original mail wrongly.

I will definitely be there on the 13th and 14th, since this is so beneficial to me and I feel so much happier now that I know I have been given a free choice.

After all, I seem to have loads time to kill.

I received a call from Teo Yan Hong on 10 Sept at 2.31 pm. it came from a fixed line phone number which i recognized to be from SAO. i instantly KNEW it would be about this.

“Hello? Is this Gary?”

“Yes.” my voice was deathly soft.

“Yan Hong here ah…”

<silence>

“Can I confirm with you your attendance this monday and tuesday?”

“Sure.” i wasn’t about to make things easy for anyone.

“Don’t you have to attend the Hall Delegacy meeting?”

“Yes. I can’t make it on Thursday and Friday.” (In hindsight, i should have just told her “Yes, but I just don’t want to go on Thursday and Friday.” Kicked myself for a long time afterwards.

“So what are your plans for then?”

“I’ll be there on Monday.”

“And tuesday?”

“I’ll send my ’second man.’”

“*nervous laugh* no.. you see we need one person only.”

“Then I can’t confirm with you.”

“Will it be alright if I don’t register you first?”

“Sure.” *click* (couldn’t slam the phone cos, well, you can’t slam a handphone.)

Excuse me..

NOTHING was said in the original email about “signing up.” we were only “urged” to reply to indicate which course (13th - 14th or 16th-17th) we wanted to go for.

“The above training course is specially organised for all Presidents of student organisations.”

You said “all Presidents”.

“As the maximum capacity per class is 35..”

35 x 2 = 70. If it weren’t compulsory, why on earth would you be expecting 70 presidents? That’s a lot of presidents, mind you.

If it were optional, AND the President couldn’t make it, WHY must he send his second man? Wouldn’t he just not sign up in the first place? Doesn’t that imply everyone was expected to be there?

Also, from your second email to me (in its entirety):

“This is only apply when student leader will be absence without given any valid reason, I’m sure you are not and that show the integrity of our student leaders. So, can I confirm your attendance?”

Once again you did not clarify that the course is on a sign-up basis. What has integrity have to do with anything if I have the option of not signing up? You seem to be expecting me.

It seems to me now that some hardline stance somewhere has changed because someone’s kicking up a fuss.

Then again, what do I know? I always seem to interpret emails wrongly.

Lamb of God / Only The Strong

If you die when there’s no one watching;
and your ratings drop and you’re forgotten -
If they kill you on their TV,
you’re a martyr and a Lamb of God

Nothing’s gonna change the world.

Maybe,
things happen for a reason, and wherein lies the answer -
To overcome the grieving of Life’s unruly lessons I’m handed in sucession.
It builds my pain which makes me strong.

It’s mine, it’s pure and as decent as i can make myself;
Inside, we all know only the strong survive.
