Professionalism?

Here’s an excerpt from a transcript of millitary communications among Isreali soldiers near the Gaza Strip. The company commander in question is on trial for the shooting of a ten year old girl who (one would assume) wandered somewhere she wasn’t meant to be. He faces up to 3 years in jail if found guilty, but oblige me while I play Devil’s Advocate here: What was the guy supposed to do anyway? I’ll admit first off that my background knowledge of this case doesn’t stretch any further than what the blurb in the article offers, but I gather that he’s overseeing some sort of OP/LP setup, and simply did his job. I am not familiar with Isreali military doctrine, and it is clear that the article contains only an excerpt of the original text, though the only thing I can think him guilty of is giving the girl no warning. If a 10-year-old poses no threat, where is he supposed to draw the line? Puberty? Legal adulthood?

SENTRY: We spotted an Arab female about 100 meters below our emplacement, near the light armored vehicle gate.

HEADQUARTERS: Observation post “Spain,” do you see it?

OBSERVATION POST: Affirmative, it’s a young girl. She’s now running east.

HQ: What is her position?

OP: She’s currently north of the authorized zone.

HQ: Are you talking about a girl under ten?

OP: Approximately a ten-year-old girl.

cc [to HQ]: We fired and killed her. She has . . . wearing pants . . . jeans and a vest, shirt. Also she had a kaffiyeh on her head. I also confirmed the kill. Over.

HQ: Roger.

Erm… cool?

Sometimes you find the weirdest shit in the most unlikely of forums… I’m too lazy to screengrab and resize so I’m copying and pasting the text here.

Some text omitted for brevity, emphasis all mine.

Get Those People a Beer!!

Someone should really give the brains behind Honda’s ads a nice cold beer. Following the success of their famous Cog advert, Honda now has this amazing piece featuring a sound effects chorus. While not as eye-opening as Cog, it certainly made me watch it twice.

Brilliant.

Gong Xi Gong Xi

And what better way to spread the festive cheer than a handful of Chinese New Year songs in english? I would write more, but I’ve got one of the tracks playing in the background as I blog, and it’s killing my brain cells.

If you thought Ch8 dramas dubbed in english were bad, check these out. They put the “T” in “tacky”.

The Japanese SAQ

Here’s a huge page of Seldom-Asked-Questions about the strage ways of the people in the Land of the Rising Sun. Among them one may find gems such as

What does the name of the famous hamburger chain, ‘MOS Burger’ mean?

What on earth are those green plastic leaves they put in bento boxes for?

What is the difference between hara-kiri and seppuku?

On the news why are the handcuffs fogged out when they show someone being arrested? Everyone knows that the person is arrested and wearing handcuffs but they won’t show the cuffs - they are fogged out like a licence plate number or pubic hair. Why is that?

Interesting…

School’s In

It’s been 10 days (give or take) of the new school term and here I am still stumbling around in a daze. i guess reality takes time to sink in, huh? Especially if it’s harsh reality. I catch myself thinking hard whenever someone asks me about the modules I registered for this sem. Not good. How am I supposed to ace anything if I can’t remember what I’m taking? (For the record, I’m up for ComputerVision and Image Processing, Simulation and Modelling, Advanced Data Management Techniques, Principles of Law, and Lighting And Rendering Pipeline)

Anyhow, printer broke down over the weekend, and as a result, I’ve been attending lessons without so much as a scrap of paper in my bag. I’m going to have to continue to look like a major slacker at least until the service center gives my machine back to me.

Just the other day Sebas mentioned that he was ready to start sending out his resumes. This got me suspicious for a while, that I wasn’t doing enough to secure myself a Bright Future. To be frank, the thought of searching for a job hadn’t even crossed my mind. Laziness? Then I shrugged and went back to dinner.

I’ve always been a take-it-as-it-comes sort of person (or in my mom’s words, tidak apa), and have always thought of it as a good thing. I take only the recommended subjects each sem, for example. I don’t overload, I don’t rush. I’ll plan for a career when I have graduated. No point being so kan cheong… yet.

Offhand, I know of a few people who’d shake their fingers at me, but heck, I’ll deal with them when as they come.

Scrabble silver

Ah well, that wraps up four years of scrabble. 3 golds and a silver. Not bad, considering training this year was nearly non-existant for me.

Headlight fluid

Q: I am writing you at my dad’s request. Recently, my boyfriend offered to change the oil in my car for me. I have a 1992 Olds 88 in very good condition (180,000 miles). Up until now, my dad has maintained it. My boyfriend charged me $45 for parts and nothing for the work. He said most of the cost was to refill the fluid levels in the headlights. When I informed my dad of this, he called me an idiot and told me not to see this boy ever again. When I asked why, he said to write to you guys. I don’t understand. My boyfriend said he used the “halogen” type fluid, which is supposed to be better than the standard type. What did I do wrong? Melissa
