School. It’s good for you.

STOMPer Milton Tan was shocked by the sight of the group ‘fooling around’ on the lorry, as the vehicle they were on sped down the Central Expressway yesterday morning (Dec 28).

Mr Tan, who is the director of the Design Singapore Council, said: “It was an accident waiting to happen.

If the lorry suddenly stopped, they would tumble onto the highway and could be run over.”

The men appeared to be part of a funeral band. They were sitting on plastic stools on the lorry, said Mr Tan.

Hmm… It seems the director of the Design Singapore Council failed basic physics as a kid. “If the lorry suddenly stopped”, the mysterious forces of nature (p = mv) would pull the boys into the vehicle, not scatter them mercilessly over the cold, unfeeling tarmac.

The only way the aforementioned scenario could happen is if the lorry were speeding arse-first down Singapore’s world-class highway - something which I doubt very much it was doing.

On conservatives and liberals

Pundits pithily and wittily describe the difference between a liberal and a conservative. “A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. A liberal is a conservative who has been arrested.” “Liberals don’t believe they deserve anything they own. Conservatives think they’re entitled to everything they’ve stolen.” Or as Marvin Gottlieb of the Dayton Daily News puts it, “a liberal is someone who frets that somewhere, somehow, somebody is getting screwed. A conservative is a person who frets that somewhere, somehow, somebody is getting something for nothing.” British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli once remarked, “A Conservative government is an organized hypocrisy” while poet Robert Frost described a liberal as a man so broadminded he wouldn’t take his own side in an argument.

Erowid is open (again?)

I received a reply from CNB. The PR officer assured me that CNB “does not censor any website”, and claimed that he/she even visited the page to be sure. Said officer then advised that I should check with my ISP on why the website is blocked.

Following this puzzling revelation (also affirmed by shawn, cy and arnold), I revisited the site and discovered that if “www” is excluded from the URL, the page is easily accessible; whereas including the “www” causes it to qualify for the shitlist. This is consistently reproducible on my system. If you’re on an ISP other than PacNet please give it a shot (click on the links below) and let me know… It might be time for me to grill PacNet.

Whatever the case, kudos to CNB for the prompt reply.

P.S. This is living proof of the utter stupidity and ineffectiveness of hardcoded filters.

The lost art of backward-singing

This guy does a remarkable job of singing a familiar tune backwards. Fantastic memory needed to pull off something like this. Just watch!

I’m on Twitter

Another slice of my boring life made public (in 140 words or less)… You can track my updates here. I currently update via IM and SMS.

Anyone else wanna join up and contribute to the public timeline? :) Be sure to add me to your contact list!

I’ll work on integrating this into the blog sidebar ASAP, so stay tuned.

Edit: Integrated. It’s right there, below the Buzz section.

Erowid censored

Erowid is no longer accessible in Singapore. What the fuck? This didn’t use to be the case.

Just because I access the site doesn’t mean I’m a junkie, nor does it mean I would like to be - the same way accessing NBA’s official site doesn’t make me a professional basketball player. I don’t even smoke, for fuck’s sake. I take this personally. What next? Wikipedia?

Internet censorship is plain ineffective, downright stupid and not to mention irritating. Now I have to go through a proxy to access it. Get high on that, CNB.

And k.l, in a stroke of genius, did this.

the night market man

the night market man 2

A vendor tends his stall at the Marina Beach, Chennai - The second longest beach in the world.

Am very happy at how this turned out.

It’s that time of the year again…

Ho ho ho.

Leading the hall life… at home

So I woke up today, played a bit of Crysis, then took the PC for a walk down to Sim Lim cos the PSU was being a bitch and irritating me with a buzzing noise every so often. Unfortunately it refused to sing in the presence of The Man and there was nothing I could do to justify an exchange, so I had to bring it back.

I then spent the rest of the afternoon gaming, and mucking around with data till hunger prompted me to seek out some food at about 5pm. Dinner was at Tiong Bahru market, then more gaming and while-wasting till I fell asleep at about 7.

Woke at 11.45, and now I’m hungry.
