COD
Day 24. This box gets featured today because mere words cannot possibly express how unspeakably awesome this game is. It makes me kinda regret buying Crysis. On Metacritic it outranks heavyweights like Crysis, UT3, BF2, BF2142 and even Portal but not the Orange Box (on the whole) and TF2 - and deservingly so.
Post processing is minimal because I have a mission to get back to…
Kit lens with close-up filter.
Update. Singapore has 3 full Fragnetics servers. I haven’t felt like this since BF2.

And that offspring is Battlefield Heroes. Details are sketchy right now, but it appears to be a free download, available “summer 2008″ (read: fall 2008) and the website looks legit.
From the press release:
Unique Cartoon Shooter Introduces a New Way to Play Battlefield
Munich, Germany, January 21, 2008 – At the Digital, Life, Design Conference (DLD) in Munich, Electronic Arts Inc., (NASDAQ: ERTS) today unveiled Battlefield Heroes™, an all-new Play 4 Free cartoon-style shooter that will bring classic Battlefield gameplay to an all new mass audience. Available for download at www.battlefield-heroes.com this summer, Battlefield Heroes is EA’s first title that is offered completely for free, and features a built-in matchmaking system to ensure that players of equal skill are paired together for fair play. Developed by DICE in Stockholm, Battlefield Heroes is leading EA’s new web-focused free to download, free to play business model which generates revenue through advertising and micro-transactions. With zero barriers to entry, now anyone can be a hero on the battlefield!
I can live with this as a free download (kudos!), I can live with this being a casual game, I can live with this being ad-supported, but please, for the love of god, don’t let this count as BF3.

…but not for the reason you probably have in mind. I can’t complete it because at the exosuit battle (the second last one!!), my framerate drops to a disgusting 1 - 2 fps. At that point, an immersive 3D game becomes an interactive slideshow, and no matter how practiced I am, no matter how much ammo I have, I can’t hit shit, and hence, can’t finish the game.
I have even tried, in desperation, to set every single setting to Low and to run the thing in 800 x 600 - but to no avail. The game freezes up just as much as when I run it at 1024 x 768 with everything on Very High. At least then, it’s a prettier slideshow.
Fuck. Waiting to see if the kind folks on the forums have any tips for me; else I’ll have to wait till the patch arrives sometime mid January to see if the problem goes away.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth a thousand pictures.
Here’s a “strider” from 2004:
…and now Virginia Tech has built a similar-looking tripedal robot with a very creepy, deliberate gait. I’d hate to have one of these hunting me down through dark corridors…

So I noticed the price of HL2: Episode 1 has dropped to $9.90 USD… and having nothing better to do on a boring afternoon away from work, I just bought it on Steam. However the thing is 4.7GB - and even downloading at 1.2Mbps is going to take some time.
Shit… Maybe I should go take a nap and come back later.
ta.
Update: This game kicks major ass…!

Recently I was greeted with looks of incredulity after people found out that I do play flight sims. Even more so when I mention I completed a journey from Singapore Changi to Heathrow. (3+ hours even with time compression on) I wonder what they’d think if they found out I actually have a force-feedback joystick. Ah well.
Anyway, apologies for the video overload of late, but this is something I couldn’t keep from blogging about - A really ncie vid of the in-game scenery made by a guy with the hardware to run the thing on full.
And people ask me what keeps me entertained during those long flights…
UPDATE: Here’s another beautiful vid from the same guy. A sad story of two planes, told in wonderfully cinematic fashion.
