Something Awesome This Way Comes - The DTLR

Move over, you Sunday-morning photographers with your pretty DSLRs and gleaming lenses and expensive megapixel collections! This here’s a digital camera for people who know about cameras, and want to look fabulous using one.

The world’s first DTLR:

Meet Carmack.

meet Carmack.

This is Carmack. (Yes, named after a certain John - I’m geeky that way.)

He’s a quiet, unassuming chap powered by 4 cores running at 2.4GHz each. Soon I’ll feed him and make him healthy and get him to run at 3.0GHz each.

Damage:

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz each + Asus P5N-E SLI Mobo - $621
  • 2 x 1 GB PC6400 Kingston HyperX CL4 - 2 x 80 = $160
  • 2 x WD 250 GB HDD (7200rpm) - 2 x 109 = $218
  • 2 x XFX 8800GT XXX 512 MB (o/c at 670MHz) - 2 x 449 = $960 (inc GST)
  • CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 750W - $229
  • Asus Silent Knight II pure copper cooler - $95
  • Antec Nine Hundred casing with insane number of fans - $215
  • MS Windows Vista Home Premium - $169

Crayon Physics Deluxe

Here’s a video of an independent game developed by this guy - He releases a new one a month. Check out the video for some awesome-looking fun!

The strider is real

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth a thousand pictures.

Here’s a “strider” from 2004:

…and now Virginia Tech has built a similar-looking tripedal robot with a very creepy, deliberate gait. I’d hate to have one of these hunting me down through dark corridors…

Buzz!

Something new on the page!

You see, I read most of my stuff nowadays via RSS using Google Reader - and recently I delved into a wonderful little feature of theirs called “Share”. With minimal setup and some shiny new javascript in the sidebar, I can now click the Share button on news stories which I find interesting from right within my reader… and have those stories’ headlines appear in the box you see on the right. Nifty, no? Seeing that I browse my feeds about 10 times a day, you should see those headlines update quite a bit.

Hope you like it. :)

P.S. The theme switcher has been removed, as promised.

Theme switcher

Alright… for all y’all who have yet to get used to this new look, I’ve installed a theme switcher plugin on each of the themes used over the past three years. You can find it as the first (or second) item in the sidebar. Flex is the 2004-05 theme, Boredom! is the 2005-06 theme, and Just Simple is the latest.

A few things to note:

  • The switcher stores your settings in a cookie, so clearing your browser cookies will reset the look of this page.
  • The Boredom! theme, due to its narrower column width, will glitch when trying to display the two wide photos below. In firefox, the photos will “overflow” into the sidebar, and in IE, the entire sidebar will simply be displaced downwards. The theme will work properly on pages which do not contain elements wider than the width of its columns.

This is both painful and regrettable, but I cannot support so many different looks, and will not pro-actively tweak the old themes to work with whatever happens to be on the front page at the moment. You have been warned. Please, however, report any bugs you find with the latest one.
  • This is not permanent. I will most likely remove the plugin in time to come.

Have fun!

P.S. I will fix the cluttered comment popup for the Just Simple theme. It irks me too. In the meantime, to leave a comment, click on the title of the post to load the permalink page. Things look much better there!
Update: fixed!!

P.P.S. Because Alex asked for a picture a post:

New phone!

So I got my K810i a few days ago. It’s neat… even has a delete key!

Brilliant pic via WiredLet’s not even go into the specifics here ok? I’m just aggregating the madness.

FSX in full detail

Recently I was greeted with looks of incredulity after people found out that I do play flight sims. Even more so when I mention I completed a journey from Singapore Changi to Heathrow. (3+ hours even with time compression on) I wonder what they’d think if they found out I actually have a force-feedback joystick. Ah well.

Anyway, apologies for the video overload of late, but this is something I couldn’t keep from blogging about - A really ncie vid of the in-game scenery made by a guy with the hardware to run the thing on full.

And people ask me what keeps me entertained during those long flights…

UPDATE: Here’s another beautiful vid from the same guy. A sad story of two planes, told in wonderfully cinematic fashion.

Nice?

The N95’s picture quality has disappointed me. Will wait for its launch before my final judgment.

UPDATE: Here’s a gallery of huge-ass images of the phone from every angle.
